"I love you," I said softly, looking straight into his eyes.
His gaze grew intense, almost hungry, as if he wanted to devour me whole.
"I love you too," he whispered near my ear.
Before I could react, he crashed his lips onto mine.
"Mmph—"
We were kissing like there was no tomorrow.
And suddenly...
His body started melting.
Yes.
Melting.
Wait.
WHAT?!
Why was he melting?
And why was I suddenly in the middle of an ocean?
I was drowning.
"Aaaa! Someone help me!"
I woke up with a jerk.
My heart was racing.
"Ugh... it was just a dream." I groaned and rubbed my face. "Why won't anyone ever let me finish my dreams?"
"Kyuki sote rehne se dream kabhi poora nahi hoga!" my mother shouted from outside my room.
I rolled my eyes.
"27 saal ki ho gayi ho par—"
And that was my cue to stop listening.
I already knew the rest of her lecture.
Marriage.
According to my dear mother, a twenty-seven-year-old unmarried daughter was practically a national crisis.
Not wanting to hear the rest, I quickly grabbed my towel and went to the washroom to finish my morning routine.
When I came back, the house had become suspiciously quiet.
Mom was nowhere in sight.
Good.
I quickly grabbed my tote bag and walked downstairs.
"Good morning, Dad," I greeted.
Dad sat on the sofa, peacefully reading his newspaper like he did every single morning.
Mom stood nearby complaining about me—like she did every single morning.
"Buuuuuiiiii!"
I turned instantly.
"Ruhu, my sweety!"
My niece stretched her tiny arms toward me while Bhabhi carried her.
Without wasting a second, I took her into my arms and started tickling her.
"Hahahaha!"
Her adorable laughter echoed through the hall.
Soon all of us—Dad, Bhai, Bhabhi, little Ruhu, and me—walked toward the dining table.
Mom was still muttering under her breath.
"Hey bhagwan... kab karegi yeh ladki shaadi?"
I ignored her completely and continued eating my paratha.
After a while, Dad cleared his throat.
"Beta, can you come home early today?"
I looked up.
"Why, Dad?"
"Someone is coming to see you."
I groaned dramatically.
"Arrgh! Again? The last boy I met was only two weeks ago. Let me rest, Dad."
I glanced at him and noticed Mom glaring at him like he had committed a crime by asking me politely.
These two...
"Just meet him once, beta," Dad said gently.
I sighed.
"Fine. At what time?"
"By four p.m.," Mom said instantly, her mood changing in a second.
A minute ago she was angry.
Now she looked excited.
Honestly... mothers are confusing.
With no other choice left, I grabbed my bag and left for the hospital.
Yes.
The hospital.
Because while my mother believed my biggest problem in life was marriage, I actually had a job.
On the way, I called my best friend—Prishu.
My best friend.
My personal diary.
"Guess what, bebs," I said. "I'm meeting another buffoon today."
"Broooo!" she laughed loudly. "Your life is so entertaining. Tomorrow we're meeting and you're telling me everything. But I don't know why... I feel like this one might be THE GUY."
I rolled my eyes.
"You say that every single time."
"Arre yaar, don't stress so much," she replied casually.
We talked for a few more minutes before I hung up.
By then, I had already reached the hospital building.
I looked up at it and took a deep breath.
Another long day was waiting for me.
And unfortunately...
So was the mystery guy at four o'clock.
