5:30 p.m.
I was buried in paperwork when my phone suddenly rang. Without bothering to check the screen, I picked it up.
"Reyansh, shall we go on a date tomorrow?"
My pen stopped mid-sentence. Slowly, I leaned back in my chair.
Who the hell is this?
"Who is this, miss?" I asked, my voice cold and controlled.
"Rey, it's Shruti. Don't you remember? We went on a date a few days ago."
I let out a quiet sigh.
"First of all," I said calmly, "my nickname isn't for you to use. Second, I don't remember you. And third... that wasn't a date."
There was silence on the other end.
"So let's not waste each other's time. Don't call this number again."
I ended the call before she could respond and blocked the number. Problem solved.
Just then, my office door opened.
"Knock, Sid," I said without looking up.
"Yaar, you know very well that until you get married, I'm not knocking," Sid replied, leaning against the door with a grin.
I looked up at him slowly.
"Try that again," I said flatly, "and you'll be knocking on the hospital door instead."
Sid burst out laughing. "Haha! What happened now? Another girl?"
I rubbed my forehead. "Apparently."
"Bro, I'm telling you," Sid said dramatically, "at this rate you'll die a virgin."
I leaned back in my chair and smirked.
"Relax. I'm not desperate enough to marry the wrong person."
Just then my phone rang again. This time I checked the screen.
Mom.
"Yes, Mom."
"Come home early today, beta. We all want to have dinner together."
"Alright. I'll be there."
I hung up.
Sid raised an eyebrow. "Let me guess. Another girl?"
I nodded.
"Yaar, what's wrong with you?" Sid said. "You've gone on so many blind dates. That last one was good. She kept calling you 'Rey' and everything."
"Exactly the problem," I replied.
Sid frowned. "What?"
"I don't like people getting comfortable with me too quickly."
Then I added casually, "Also, half of them have weirder expectations than a reality show."
"Oh really?"
"Some of them even wanted to test if we're 'compatible.'"
Sid's eyes widened. "Compatible... as in bed?"
I simply nodded.
Sid burst out laughing.
"Bro! You're rejecting those girls too?"
I shrugged. "I'm looking for a wife, not a weekend experiment."
Sid wiped tears of laughter from his eyes. "I'm telling you... the next one will be the ONE."
"We'll see," I said.
Later that evening, I reached home and saw everyone already sitting at the dining table.
I went upstairs, freshened up, and came down.
"Come, Rey," Mom called.
I sat down and started eating.
"So," Mom said carefully, "how was Shruti?"
I looked up.
"Mom... please."
She immediately understood.
"Okay. You didn't like her."
I nodded.
Dad cleared his throat.
"You're meeting another girl tomorrow."
I closed my eyes for a moment.
"Dad—"
"No arguments," Mom interrupted. "And this time we're coming with you."
I frowned. "All of you?"
"Yes," Dad replied calmly. "Her father invited us. I know him well. Also, the day after tomorrow is his granddaughter's birthday."
"Yay! We're going to Bhabhi's house!" Sara and Saransh shouted together while Dev grinned.
I looked at them, unimpressed.
"I haven't even met her yet."
But they had already started discussing gifts and clothes.
I sighed and finished my dinner.
"Fine, Dad. Tomorrow."
Later, in my room, I sat on the bed looking at the photo on my phone.
A girl with calm eyes stared back at me.
"Sia Bedi," I murmured.
I studied the picture for a moment.
"Let's see... what you're like."
I placed the phone on the table and lay back on the bed.
A few minutes later, sleep slowly pulled me into darkness.
